Weaver completes full training, eyes Saturday return

Forward Cam Weaver, who was the Dynamo's second leading scorer this preseason and arguably the team's most impressive player in camp, went through a full training session Monday at Robertson Stadium.

The full training session was Weaver's first since he suffered a right knee strain in the penultimate game of the preseason against San Jose in mid March.

Weaver returned to training briefly in early April, but he aggravated the injury before he had completed a full training session. That setback cost him another month of action, but Weaver appears in line to return this Saturday against D.C. United at Robertson Stadium.

"I'm still going forward, so that's a positive," Weaver said after practice. "I did everything today with the team. That's the first time I've done that.

"I just hope to not re-aggravate it again. I'm just trying to keep the strength and everything else with all the extra work I've been doing before practice on my knee to try to build that strength up to make sure I don't re-aggravate it again. I'm feeling pretty good about it. It felt pretty good today."

Barring a setback, you can expect Weaver to be on the Dynamo team sheet against D.C. United. His return could be a huge boost for a team that desperately has needed a forward who could hold the ball up front — not to mention score regularly. With Brian Ching out most of the season and now in training camp with the U.S. national team, the Dynamo desperately need a forward who can keep the ball up and score some goals.

Asked if he planned to return Saturday, Weaver said, "That's the goal. Today is Monday and I was able to get through a full session without much pain. I still have some days."
